Time for the drysuit?

As I write this the clocks have recently gone back and the evenings are now dark and dismal. Not much more sailing unless you are a ‘frostbite’ series type and have a nice snug ‘woolly bear’ and a dry suit. Having been talked into attending Grafham in October I decided it was finally time to buy such a bit of kit, Ebay came to the rescue with an unworn Typhoon breathable suit at a give away price. Thing was, it was so warm at Grafham, I didn’t need it!!

I said at the start of the summer that I intended to get to 6 open meetings during the year. Well, I didn’t quite make it as holidays conspired to clash with two key dates but I did manage the Weymouth Regatta, the Nationals, Grafham and Weston. You will find write ups on the events within.

The new Website www.unicorn-cat.co.uk

At the AGM I took on the task of developing a new web site for the class. Previously we had relied on hosting on www.catamaran.co.uk and many of the submissions I made never made it onto the site. To cut a long story short, you will now find our new site via the link on the above site or go direct to www.unicorn-cat.co.uk If you keep a regular eye on the site you will find all the latest sailing reports posted as soon as I get them. I have tried to make the site more current but my main problem is still getting sufficient articles and pictures to generate interest in the class. So please let me have your news, items for sale, pictures, projects, sailing tips, boat tuning etc.

Next Year

There will be a traveller series with a suitable trophy – I will publish the list of events in the Spring newsletter, open meetings likely to include Bala, Rutland, Stone, Stokes Bay, Grafham & Weston. Results will probably be the best 4 results to count.

Where do you want the Nationals? Is anyone interested in long distance events such as the Texel or 3 Piers? Are there any clubs who would like to invite us to an event? Please let me know by email or snail mail on , call me on 01305 871693 or post to: J D Wade, Elworth Farmhouse, West Elworth, Portesham, Dorset, DT3 4HF

In this newsletter I have included:

Chairmans Chatter, Nationals, Weston, Grafham, Weymouth, Stokes Bay, AGM, membership form

Chairman’s Chatter

Hi everyone, it is the end of the sailing season for most of us and time for me to put a few words together to sum up the year.

For me it has been a very busy with more of my time taken up in the pursuit of rest and relaxation eg holidays in the sun touring Europe with Tanya and the dog even better than sailing along with the odd bit of sailing in the UK.

The sailing has been great this year with a very enjoyable week at Stone for the nationals with the closest sailing for some time. All who sailed that week will agree the sailing and weather were superb with good courses and a good range of wind. I would like thank all at Stone for organising such a good week, I look forward to next years Stone week and recommend anyone that has not tried it to give it a go.

I would like to welcome Iain Rogers into the unicorn class along with his 3 unicorns that he is using at Weston sailing club to promote the class and encourage others at the club to test sail one of his spare boats. This is the sort of enthusiasm that can only help the class, well done Iain.

Some of us, Richard, Iain, John and myself made the pilgrimage to Grafham for the cat open and were rewarded by a superb weekend of sailing. There were 4 A Class also sailing so I opted to go in the fast handicap so we could sail with them. This was not the most popular of decisions as it meant upwind downwind sailing but despite this we all had a good time with John sailing consistently well to be the first Unicorn, well done John.

I wont say any more about the sailing because I know that John has already done an excellent write up of the event. I would like to thank John for his enthusiasm in publishing the newsletter and on the excellent job of updating the web site, for those of you who have not been editor it is a difficult task because people seem reluctant to write articles.

It was decided at the AGM that we would exhibit at the dingy exhibition on 4TH and 5TH March 2006. I have contacted the organisers but they are fully booked, they have placed us on the reserve list. If we do get a stand I will take my new boat to the show but will require some help. I will keep you up to date via John who can E-Mail most members.

There are a number of fairly new boats for sale, drop me a line at garyrpiper@hotmail.com for further details.

I wish you all a happy Christmas and a prosperous new year from Gary, Tanya, Hazel, and Hayley.
